The recent buzz in the C.S.E department is about the establishment of the student chapter under the Computer Society of India. As you all know last year we had the student chapter of the ISRO, a.k.a Astronautical Society of India (ASI) established( Errr.… they said they would establish and we even had events and tour…but… )
So I was thinking what exactly are these chapters???
Here it goes…
A Chapter of the Society is a group of members in a particular locality or city. The chapters play a major role in achieving the objectives of the Society. It has direct links with the members. These chapters are run and administered by the members i.e the Students under the supervision of the institution. Now isn’t that cool??? Now if you are wondering what is cool in that here are the pros-
- We get to learn various things which are par our academic standards. And once we are serious about it we get everything we need, thanks to the society.
- The society which remains in direct contact with the chapter provides all necessary help for the members of the chapter. Professional help can be obtained from members higher up in the society to carry out innovative projects.
- We (CSI members) get journals, with the latest updates in the related field. (commonly known as MAGAZINES!!!)
- Various events, mostly seminars, are held which help members to learn and participate and know the real world scenario of a project, interview or seminar.
- Something that many people might not know is that these societies also help the institution by providing them with sponsors for various events such as techno fests, and youth events. I don’t know if this happens directly or sponsors prefer colleges with these chapters. As they see it as a standard. ( Of course , only if the members of the chapter are promising enough and the chapter succeeds in being consistent enough over a period of time)
Now the last point holds lot of importance to people like me. I want to see some good events being held in my college, and be able to proudly say it out.
But the interest of the management has been in a different view. Its quite easy to guess what it might be, it makes thing easy for the management to get the accreditation, which in turn increases the standards, but that doesn’t necessarily mean facilities!!! Yeah standards go up and people start preferring our college. I wish standards and facilities were directly proportional!!!
And now as members and the being the possible active members we plan to make it really worth having a chapter of CSI and not being a mere seminar period stuff!!!!
(About ASISC, I love their concept of tours and wish to this is added to CSISC too!)
Wanna know something about these societies, first things first… so, to begin with, here is some techie info about the ASI first
Astronautical Society of India
The Astronautical Society of India (ASI) was set up in 1990. ASI provides and spreads technical and other information related to astronautics by conducting technical meetings, bringing out technical publications and organizing exhibitions. The society is also playing an active role to promote the interests of other developing countries in the field of astronautics through the International Astronautical Federation, Paris, in which the ASI is a voting member.
ASI has, on its roll, eminent personalities in the field of astronautics as Honorary Fellows/Fellows. A Program Council consisting of elected Honorary Fellows/Fellows with Chairman, Space Commission, as its Ex-officio Chairman, oversees the functioning of the Society. An Executive Council consisting of 9 members including the President and Vice President, Executive Secretary and Treasurer, elected by the General Body, looks after the day-to-day administration of the society.
